Kids have so many choices these days! There are so many games they can play, and there are many platforms they can use. These include a personal computer (PC) and the numerous devices designed especially for gaming. The game consoles include small portable devices, and larger ones suitable for home use.

There are many different kinds of games available. Some are educational, and others are pure entertainment. The technology has advanced so far that today's games can be extremely realistic. Some of the content is not suitable for kids to view. Fortunately we are aided in the quest for appropriate games by a rating system that helps us choose wisely. Also, some of the modern game consoles include parental controls that let us regulate things like content and usage periods.

In the early days in the development of video game systems, we had the Atari video game system. It offered wholesome games such as Pac-Man or Space Invaders. At first the number of available games was not great, and these were only fun and wholesome games devoid of adult or inappropriate content.

Your PC

Your personal computer (PC) may be able to play many of the thousands of PC games available. If you already have a PC, this may be the best platform. However, it's also good to learn about the modern systems dedicated to game play, as they do provide an incredible gaming experience in some cases not available from a PC.

Modern Consoles

Now there is a large selection of video game systems that offer an incredibly wide selection of games. The systems include the Sony PlayStation 2 and 3, the Nintendo GameCube and DS (and variants), and the Microsoft Xbox and Xbox 360. These video game systems can use any computer monitor or modern wide-screen TV for video display.

Low Cost System

If you have very young kids, and want to get a video game system at low price, you could look for a used Nintendo GameCube console. There are plenty of games for that unit rated E for everyone, and suitable for very young children. Your tots will love it, and you can always get a more expensive console later on as your kids grow older.

Portable Platforms

If you are interested in a portable game platform, you may want to check out the Sony PlayStation Portable, or PSP. Other options are the Nintendo DS or DS Lite or DSi. These portable video game systems offer good selection of games, but of course the screens are quite small.

If you are concerned about your parental responsibility, you may be glad to learn that some of the modern gaming systems include parental controls. The Nintendo DS and DS Lite both use access code systems so that parents can control downloads, Internet access, and photo sharing.

Consoles for Home Use

For home use, the more modern consoles include the Microsoft Xbox 360, Sony PlayStation 3 (PS3) and the Nintendo Wii. These are currently the leaders in modern video game systems for the home.

Xbox 360

There are over 500 games available for the Xbox 360. Online play is available through a subscription service called "Xbox 360 Live". Some games have a multiplayer online mode. There are many accessories available for the Xbox 360, including gaming automobile steering wheel and pedals, guitar and other musical instruments, dance pad, and auxiliary cooling systems (some Xbox 360 units have experienced problems with overheating).

The Xbox 360 can play movies from multiple sources, and offers parental controls called Family Settings to allow control over the types of games and films that kids can play or view, based on content ratings. It also allows control of the types of interaction on Xbox 360 Live service. Note that the default Family Settings are for full access, so you will need to configure it for your kids.

PS3

The PlayStation 3 (PS3) also has multimedia capabilities, including DVD and Blu-ray Disc, and allows online play through the free PlayStation Network. There are at least 400 games available, and the same kinds of accessories as described above for Xbox 360.

The PS3 and PSP have parental controls that restrict the types of games that can be played and downloaded, as well as video content that can be viewed.

Wii

The Nintendo Wii started a revolution in gaming systems with its wireless remote, called the Wii Remote or Wiimote. It can be used as a handheld pointing device and detects movement in three dimensions. This provides a superior level of interactivity that translates into lots of fun! In 2007 the Wii Fit game let parents see that video gaming could involve giving the kids some exercise! Now there are more than 500 games for the Wii, and by connecting multiple controllers up to 4 people can play a game (for certain games designed for that). Online play is available through the free Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. Again, the accessories described for the Xbox 360 are also available for the Wii.

The Wii offers parental controls for game playing and Internet use (content and messaging). Game playing settings use age ratings.

Game Selection

You pretty much can't go wrong when choosing one of the modern video game systems like Xbox 360 or PS3. Be aware that some games are available across multiple game systems, but some are only available on a specific one. That may be a consideration if your kid is really intent on playing a particular game that can only be played on one of the console systems!

2. Kaspersky - Kaspersky has received top ratings for the same above-mentioned aspects such as effectiveness and support. This software has received many awards from top organizations. It is one of the most advanced products available on the market today; it would be an ideal choice to protect your computer.

3. ESET Nod32- This is said to be a simple, but very thorough security protection solution. They scored highest on effectiveness, support, and easy installation. In 2008, the ESET Nod32 received major updates while maintaining the high standard of security protection it has always provided.

4. AVG Anti-Virus- This year two previously separate products were merged with their award winning antivirus software to ensure improved overall protection for your home computer systems. They have also improved their scanning engine which should cut down on time taken to complete a virus and spyware scan. They also reported an overall decrease in overall system resource usage.

5. F Secure Antivirus- The security protection suites offered by F-Secure are used by both home computer users and large corporations on their massive networks. They strive to ensure that the internet user understands general online security safety measures and precautions, along with the potential threat caused by an inadequate security setup. Overall F-Secure offers an excellent package.

6. Trend Micro- Although this software may cause a slight decrease in performance of some basic home PCs,Trend guarantee that the security level provided by their software will more than make up for any slight decrease in performance that may be experienced. This software is aimed directly at the home internet user rather than larger corporations and receives high scores in all areas. The lowest score is attributed to the help/support section. Trend Micro is used by many people and is a viable security solution.

7. McAfee VirusScan - McAfee is a leading antivirus software provider. This software now comes equipped with extra features including an email scanner. It is not the best security option in my opinion but very popular none the less.

8. Norton Antivirus- Norton Antivirus is a widely known antivirus scanner and has been around for many years. It is the choice of many computer manufacturers who install it as part of their normal PC or laptop setup. The 2008 version is equipped with antivirus protection as well as anti-spyware detection. It is not one of my favorites as in my personal testing I have found it to be a resource hog and some end users have found it difficult to remove from their systems. Symantec are a well respected security software provider and constantly strive to update and improve the software they offer to their customers.

9. CA Antivirus- If you are looking to only detect and remove viruses on your computer then this may an option you would want to consider. This is the primary function of this product and it does not contain additional detection capabilities.

10. Norman Antivirus and Antispyware- This software is good at detecting spyware and viruses that may be lurking on your home computer. Again some users have reported a slight decrease in computer performance as a result of installing Norman AV.

The Seven Characteristics of a High-Performing Team

If you lead a team, you know that the journey to high-performance is ongoing. It's the rare team that achieves high-performance and just stays there. In my business life, whether I've managed a team within an organization, or run my own company, it's been unusual to keep the same team together for longer than a year. Team members come and go, driven by the needs of the organization and their own career goals. And every time the members of a team changes, the team needs to regroup and refocus.

Shared Purpose and Direction

On a high-performing team, everyone on the team is committed to the team's purpose. They know exactly what that purpose is because the team leader keeps them focused by constantly communicating that purpose in team meetings and regular updates. The team leader helps each individual team member meet his or new own needs while serving the overall purpose of the team.

The Seven Characteristics of a High-Performing Team

Motivating Goals

The team leader ensures that everyone on the team has clearly defined goals and targets. In some organizations, the strategic goals and departmental objectives are determined by senior management. In that case, the team leader makes sure that these goals are clearly discussed. Team members should understand how their jobs support the achievement of the defined goals, and, if possible, have the opportunity to develop individual goals and action plans that spell out how they will contribute to the success of the organization.

Commitment to Individual and Team Roles

On a Total Team, team members have clearly defined expectations but they also understand how each of their roles is linked to every other role. Team leaders ensure that team members are cross-trained in other responsibilities so that everyone can back each other up when needed. The team leader makes sure that individual job responsibilities are fulfilled, but, at the same time, works to help the individuals develop a common language, processes and approaches that allow them to function as a team.

Multi-Directional Communication

On the best teams, team members solve problems, communicate with each other, and keep the team leader updated on current challenges or emerging issues. On low-performing teams, communication is one-way (from team leader to team members) or two-way (between the team leader and individuals). Skilled leaders focus on developing multi-directional communication, avoiding the trap of communicating with individuals members of the team.

Authority to Decide or Act

No doubt about it, new teams may have to earn this authority by demonstrating that they understand the team's purpose, processes and priorities. However, effective team leaders work toward pushing authority for the team's outcomes to the team members. Team members know how and when to get approval for decisions and, in the best of cases, are charged with making on-the-spot decisions when a customer is facing them. On low-performing teams, team members have to constantly get approval before taking action, significantly reducing their effectiveness and negatively affecting their sense of engagement on the team.

Reliance on Diverse Talents

Savvy team leaders pay attention to helping team members understand their unique strengths, talents, and weaknesses. No individual team member can be good at everything. The best team leaders assist everyone to develop an appreciation for individual style differences, natural gifts, and personal experience. Teams are encouraged to use the language of acceptance and appreciation, rather than criticism and judgment. Team leaders consciously hire team members who bring complementary skill sets, unique experience, and diverse perspectives.

Mutual Support and Trust

The seventh characteristic may be the most important, and frankly, is probably the most elusive. The team leader can't force a team to be supportive and trusting--it's a natural result of shared responsibility, shared success, and mutual respect. The high-performing team achieves mutual support and trust because they have a history of working together to achieve grand dreams and results. They have met challenges, overcome obstacles, backed each other up in good times and bad. The Total Team has earned each other's trust.

Building a high-performing team is not an easy task. However, if you're a team leader that is up to the challenge, then consciously focus on developing these seven characteristics. Bring them to your next team meeting and ask team members to evaluate them. How do you know whether each of these characteristics is present or absent on your team? What is the team willing to do to develop these seven characteristics? Then ask the individuals on your team to commit to 3 - 5 specific actions they will take in the next 60 days. Revisit these commitments regularly and see what develops. I guarantee a rewarding journey to high-performance.

No Audio Device Installed? - Restore Sound on Your Computer Quickly

No audio device Installed? Many people get this error message when they try to play music or video with Windows Media Player or other players. And there is no sound on computer at all. Why does this error happen while the audio card is already installed?

There are many factors can cause the error. You can follow the steps below to fix this errors quickly.

1) Examine BIOS Setting.
If you use a onboard audio card, you need to check the BIOS setting. Restart your computer and enter BIOS, open Integrated Peripherals and find the audio card(normally its name is AC97 Audio). Then set it as Auto or Enable. Then find On Board AC97 Control and set it as Auto or Enable. Save and exit.

If the problem still exists, you should follow the step 2.

2) Check Device Manager
a) Right click My Computer and then Properties. Click Hardware Tab and Device Manager.
b) Check "Sound, video and game controllers" item. If there is a cross icon on any sub item under it, then right click the sub item and choose Enable.

If there is no cross icon but a Question mark or Exclamatory mark, it means the audio card driver is installed improperly or damaged. You will need to reinstall the audio card driver. But most of the time, the Device Manager cannot detect errors of the devices. You should go to step 3.

3) Reinstall/Update Audio Card Driver
In fact, up to 60% of the "no audio device installed/found" errors result from damaged or corrupted sound card driver. If the driver is corrupted or damaged, Windows will not be able to recognize the sound card and computer probably has no sound at all. You need to reinstall and update the sound card driver to fix the problem.
